Brief History and background for its establishment :
The activities of Tourism, prior to 1999 were part of Transport Department. However, in 1999, to give due importance to Tourism related activities, it was separated from Transport Department and given the status of an independent Department under allocation of business Rules 1993. Prior to 1999 Tourism Department was part of Transport Department and was separated from it w.e.f 1.8.1999. Now the Department is independently working with its own objectives and activities .The main objectives of Tourism Department are to plan for various infrastructure facilities and essential services for promoting Tourism in Delhi. Monitoring of plan and non-plan scheme related to Tourism sector. Tourism Department has started a scheme called "Registration of Premises under Bed & Breakfast Scheme" for Tourist, which was earlier being implemented by the Regional Tourist Office of Govt. of India. The Objective of the scheme is to provide affordable hygenic accommodation both for foreign and domestic tourists.. Collection and compilation of tourist statistics data for onward transmission on monthly basis to Ministry of Tourism GOI. Development of infrastructure for promotion of Tourism.Organizing of Cultural Festivals i.e.. Mango, Winter Carnival Roshnara, Shalimar, Qutab Festival etc. Grant-in-aid to DTTDC for strengthening of Tourist centers. Grant-in-aid to Delhi Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology. The institute is imparting training for degree course under the National Council for Hotel with 40.
