Delhi has a very high potential for development of tourism and Govt. of Delhi is taking a number of steps to attract more and more foreign as well as domestic tourists.A Tourism Policy, which aims at conservation of rich cultural heritage and develop Delhi as the world-class cultural heritage tourism destination, is on the anvil.It will provide for active participation of the private sector so as to develop tourism as a major source of employment
and revenue generation. Applications have been invited for appointment of Consultant to assist in finalization of the Tourism Policy.
Phase-I of Garden of Five Senses tourism project at Said-ul-Ajaib has been completed and it has been opened to the public. Work of phase-II of the project is likely to be completed which includes provision of a sport climbing wall besides other facilities.
The existing facilities at Boat House, Bhalswa lake are being upgraded and Water Sports equipments will be provided during this financial year. Apart from this the possession of Sanjay lake, Mayur Vihar has been taken over from DDA and Water Sports activities have been commenced there. The possession of Sahadara lake is being taken over and Water Sports activities like Bunggy Jumping, Jetties, Shikara, water scooters etc. will be started there in near future.
So far, 30 de-notified monuments have been restored in Mehrauli Area and work on remaining 04 monuments is likely to be completed. Apart from this, work of installation of 167 signage's throughout Delhi has been completed.. Construction of heritage trail in Mehrauli block and in Old Delhi has also been taken up.
The Govt. plans to encourage Dilli Haat type projects to promote art, craft, food and culture in different parts of Delhi and one such haat is coming up in Pitampura. Tourism Department organizes cultural festivals like Jahan-e-Khusrau, Garden Tourism, Qutub, Mango, Ananya festivals which have been appreciated not only locally but also by the foreign tourists/ dignitaries.
International fairs like Travel and Tourism fair, SATTE, IATO Convention, TAAI Convention etc.
The Govt. of NCT of Delhi has taken up the work regarding approval of restaurants as per approved guidelines, on transfer of work from Govt. of India, Ministry of Tourism. So far, about 200 restaurants have been approved by the Department. The paying Guest Residential Accommodation scheme is being reviewed to make it more popular. The work of construction of Phase – I of building of Delhi Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology has been completed .
